Sherry Lansing is an American former actress, film studio executive, and philanthropist. She was the first woman to head a major film studio, serving as the president of 20th Century Fox from 1980 to 1983, and as the chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures from 1992 to 2005. Lansing was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a Jewish family. She attended Northwestern University, where she majored in English and theater. After graduating in 1966, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. She appeared in several television shows and films, including The Love Boat, The China Syndrome, and The Stepford Wives. In 1980, Lansing was hired as the president of 20th Century Fox, becoming the first woman to head a major film studio. During her tenure, she oversaw the production of such films as The Empire Strikes Back, The Omen, and The French Lieutenant's Woman. In 1992, Lansing was appointed chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, where she oversaw the production of such films as Forrest Gump, Braveheart, and Titanic. She retired from Paramount in 2005. In addition to her film career, Lansing is also a philanthropist. She is the founder of the Sherry Lansing Foundation, which supports cancer research, education, and other causes. She is also a board member of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the California Institute of Technology.
