She was named an 1981 All-American after her senior year of 1980-81. During this time, she was the leader in field goal percentage at.750. Menken holds the Oregon State career records for rebounds (901), field goal percentage (.692), and points (2243). In 55 games, she had double-doubles in points and rebounds and was the career’s highest scorer with 51 points.
Menken-Schaudt played on the 1983 World University Games team, coached by Jill Hutchison. She averaged 11 points per games, and had a 25-point contribution in the semi-final against Yugoslavia, a game the USA won by only a single point. She helped the team go on to win the gold medal.
Following graduation, Menken-Schaudt played professionally for eight years, logging six seasons in Italy and two more in Japan. She credits playing professionally with helping to extend her playing days, thereby allowing her the opportunity to make the gold medal-winning 1984 American Olympic team.
Menken-Schaudt was selected to represent the USA at the 1981 World University games in Bucharest, Romania. Kay Yow coached the team. China held a halftime advantage over the USA after the USA won the opening game. Denise Curry’s 26 points helped the USA win by two points. Canada led at halftime but the USA came back to win by two points. The USA won by three, 79-76. USA defeated host Romania by 23 points from MenkenSchaudt to win the gold medal match. The Russian team proved too strong and won the gold medal. Menken-Schaudt averaged 10.4 goals per game.
Menken was attracted to the Linn-Benton women’s basketball team, and became one of seven players. Menken approached Oregon State University (OSU), asking about playing collegiately. She was granted a partial scholarship and joined the team for the 1979-1980 season. Menken was a young, uncoached player who became an OSU coach Aki Hill’s special project. He helped her develop fundamental skills such as a solid back to the basket game in the low post and smooth turnaround jumping shot.
